trick or treat

Picking up Pirate Charlie at Baby Jail.

Charlie in relentless search of candy.

Schuyler in "cat pose"... a little known Yoga pose.

The journey begins.

The only way Schuyler would pose for this photo was by negotiating a photo-for-candy deal.

I hadn't been trick-or-treating in Bermuda since... well, since I was their age pretty much.  I didn't know what to expect.   Were people into Hallowe'en?  Would we be in for constant disappointment?  Would we get lectures from the fundamentalist Christians on the island who believe it is heretical and evil?  We nervously embarked and knocked on our first door (the house with the sign that said "Trick-or-Treaters welcome" which made us worry about what that implied about houses without such overt welcomes).  We thought the kids would be bored (especially Charlie who we thought wouldn't "get it") but, man oh man, did they ever "get it".  Despite lugging four times his body weight in candy around in his bucket, Charlie would NOT let go of his bucket.  This was HIS and he was going to ensure it stayed that way.  They absolutely loved it.  We just went to about ten houses around the neighbourhood which procured plenty of goodies and gave us a chance to get to know some of the neighbours.  Back at the ranch, they were allowed one candy to eat before bed and one a day over the next week.  Children have a nice life... a day when they can dress up as whatever they want without ridicule and people give them the thing they want most (candy) for free!  It almost makes you love humankind.
