here comes santa claus

There seems to be this strange paradox of Santa and parents. Parents have ideas in their head of what Christmas with their kids should be which generally consist of photo ops capturing beautifully contrived holiday moments which pretend to capture the holiday cheer. We fight to get photos of (a) the kids in Xmas hats (b) the kids in matching holiday outfits and of course (c) the kids on santa's knee. Well, you may have seen Schuyler's first attempt where she actually sat on her dad's knee while Santa crept surreptitiously into the photo. Above is our second attempt to et our kid to sit on a stranger's lap and accept candy gifts from him. Later we will work to undo this training. Schuyler's reaction was typical of her: First she was terrified and glued to her chair while older kids swarmed the poor guy. Next she darted into the fray right up to Santa (ruining several other parent's attempts to capture that quintessential moment) on reconnaissance missions. Eventually she wouldn't get away from santa (despite the protestations of increasingly angry parents) until, of course, the time came for her to get on his knee for her photo. At that moment, it was as if we had offered her a root canal.
Charlie was nonplussed by the whole situation. Fortunately, Kim was on hand (since she also got us into the Santa viewing) to sooth both kids when things got too much.
