behaving like an ass

As it so happens, Schuyler's 6 month check up was on Hallowe'en where Dr. West dressed as Eeyore checked her out and pronounced her well. She was 26.4 inches long and 18 lbs 2 oz - at least ten pounds of which was pure cuteness.

...and nowhere to go

Schuyler is pictured here in her Sunday best... just seconds away from teaching her parents a valuable lesson about babies, nice clothes, and food stains.

sign of the times

It seems Schuyler is showing an early interest in politics. As a new father, i found this story "I didn't vote for Obama today" particularly poignant.

yes we can

Immediately after Schuyler was born she was handed to me and i was supposed to talk with her. In the light of witnessing the miraculous nature of new life, i was supposed to find small talk with a brand new human with the added pressure of several nurse, doctor and midwife onlookers - a tough crowd. I welcomed her to the world and told her how amazing her mother was for bringing her to the living air and then i told her about Barack Obama. I told her i hoped she would grow up knowing him as President Obama.

This morning, as the results were official, i lifted the t.v. embargo for a couple of minutes to let Schuyler glimpse history - even if she can't yet understand what this means for so many people in the world. I don't expect this man to walk on water but i can't help feeling proud of what was accomplished here today. I feel proud that an intelligent, eloquent, inspiration man of integrity will lead the strongest nation in the world after too many years of a high functioning moron. Schuyler, I can't guarantee you this man will be a great president or leader but i can tell you that he is the best hope for greatness and leadership that your mawkish, tired dad has seen in politics in his lifetime.

Yes, we can.

baby got sauce

Schuyler started solid foods today... by which i mean she is in the process of developing a new fashion statement by wearing the food instead of eating it. She was surprisingly interested in the bowl of mush her Mum forced on her and i think when she actually figures out how peristalsis works, she'll really dig it. She's already mastered the reverse with her milk in an output that directly correlates with the cost of the clothing being worn by the burper (which may have been an attempt to bring us in line with her couture). In any case, a very cool milestone for us and we're proud of our little gal.

Trick or Treat?

Since Schuyler was not actually aware of Hallowe'en, we decided the best treat we could give her was some quality family time. We did sort of dress her up like a boy today... maybe that was her costume. I was going to read her the history of the jack-o-lantern and it's namesake stingy jack but that is not really a kid's tale. It turns out that Jack liked his whisky and the Devil ain't too bright.

shopping

Now that she is finally able to (almost) sit upright with the help of some creative wedging of stuffed animals and a belt strap, we can take her grocery shopping without lugging the car seat in with us. Such is the excitement in our sleepy lives.
