Immediately after Schuyler was born she was handed to me and i was supposed to talk with her. In the light of witnessing the miraculous nature of new life, i was supposed to find small talk with a brand new human with the added pressure of several nurse, doctor and midwife onlookers - a tough crowd. I welcomed her to the world and told her how amazing her mother was for bringing her to the living air and then i told her about Barack Obama. I told her i hoped she would grow up knowing him as President Obama.
This morning, as the results were official, i lifted the t.v. embargo for a couple of minutes to let Schuyler glimpse history - even if she can't yet understand what this means for so many people in the world. I don't expect this man to walk on water but i can't help feeling proud of what was accomplished here today. I feel proud that an intelligent, eloquent, inspiration man of integrity will lead the strongest nation in the world after too many years of a high functioning moron. Schuyler, I can't guarantee you this man will be a great president or leader but i can tell you that he is the best hope for greatness and leadership that your mawkish, tired dad has seen in politics in his lifetime.
Yes, we can.
