Since Schuyler was not actually aware of Hallowe'en, we decided the best treat we could give her was some quality family time. We did sort of dress her up like a boy today... maybe that was her costume. I was going to read her the history of the jack-o-lantern and it's namesake stingy jack but that is not really a kid's tale. It turns out that Jack liked his whisky and the Devil ain't too bright.

shopping
Now that she is finally able to (almost) sit upright with the help of some creative wedging of stuffed animals and a belt strap, we can take her grocery shopping without lugging the car seat in with us. Such is the excitement in our sleepy lives.

splish splash
Schuyler joined her Mama for a "big girl" bath... and i think she kind of liked it. So long as there is a pirate duck (a "duckaneer") involved she's cool with most things. We'll have to have him on standby for when she tries solids in a week or so.

big girl, big chair, big cup
Our cub tries out her fashionable (circa 1981) high chair and sippy cup. Her indifference was overwhelming.

down in the blue chair
The green bouncy chair has been sent out out to pasture, replaced by the new and improved (and un-topple-over-able) blue chair which comes with a built in toy rack for our little cub. So this is her rocking out. So it's just you and i my blue friend...
Fasten your seatbelts...
Travelling with a small child adds another dimension to the already fun and peppy world of air travel. To save money, she doesn't get a seat but instead rides as a "lap child" which is like having a lap puppy except human and much more likely to poop on your leg. Schuyler stole her Dad's seat but couldn't work the tricky mechanism that keeps you bound to your seat. Either that or she was getting ideas for a fashion accessory.

coffee, sports and spoons
Nothing says "vacation" like having no plans for the morning. Except Liz being sent to the farm for milk. Kicking around the kitchen, Schuyler learned the pleasures of the Sports section (specifically, destroying it) and wooden spoons (specifically, seeing if she can choke on it). For the record, it is possible.

Montpelier, VT - Autumn Edition

Taking advantage of her father's midterm break, Schuyler, her dad and the milk maker returned to the land of deciduous trees splashed with reggae colours where Nan, Gramps and Grandma grant the tired parents reprieve. After forgetting to bring her books to the green mountain state, we resorted to teaching her to read using the election signs we passed on the walks. I think her first words might be "O-bama". She's very excited to pick up her absentee ballot for the 2026 election.

passengers needing assistance or those with small children...
Caution: Please be careful opening overhead bins as items may have shifted during the flight. Especially crucial as Schuyler has recently learned how to roll over. Unfortunately, she's only mastered one way so we frequently find her face down in the mattress squirming for oxygen. You'd think she would turn her head to the side but not our kid. Anyway, these pics are from her second voyage to her maternal home in the United States of America as the financial markets teeter on the verge of collapse. Hey, maybe she will get some cheap real estate.

zoolander
If you are a parent in Bermuda, you are practically required by law to take your child to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo where Schuyler can get acquainted with all the endemic species such as wallabies and alligators. With the myriad of rich flora and fauna, our daughter was most fascinated with the pump that pumped water into the exhibits. That's our girl! Appreciating the underappreciated in life. Nobody thinks how hard that pump works and what a thankless job it is pumping water into the exhibit every day while visitors take photos of the monkey eating his own poop, but Schuyler does. And the pump was grateful.
mum and dad
Babies are apparently better than adults at recognizing faces - even when it is the face from another species (which explains her interest in my face in particular). She has also developed an interest in phrenology or at least a very strong impulse to grab and handle heads (much to the consternation of those wearing expensive eyeglasses... Sarah Palin beware!).
