Dad Day

Well, I'm officially a "Dad". While I received no neckties, I did have a joyous sleep in this morning and some homecooked scrambled eggs with tomato, basil and lardon courtesy of the lady of the house (tomorrow i'll have to return to cooking duties).

It is a little freaky and bizarre knowing that, from now on, Father's Day will have meaning for me beyond giving thanks to my own father for the emotional bounty he has given me - that this darling little girl is stuck with me for a Dad. If there is anything that makes you want to be a better man, it is the weight of a sleepy, smilely infant on your shoulder as you try and type one handed into this blog.

In between all the diapers and feeds, we try and squeeze in some parenting and it is hard. We constantly chide ourselves for not reading to her more (although she has almost had three chapters of my politics textbook read to her and is a bona fide expert in social contract theory). Since stumbling into adulthood, i've been humbled by the little things my parents did to teach me how to live a full and happy life. Standing at the beginning of Schuyler's life, I hope I can listen, love and learn with her so that one day she can feel as proud of her parents as I am of mine.
